Jan 2010 update:
I discussed with Mrs. Alamelu over phone.Mrs. Alamelu said that :
About 5 or 6 goats have delivered babies.
Two goats were pregnant
Some beneficiaries complained that their female goat was not able to become pregnant
She said that those beneficiaries who got goat kid were now reluctant to give away the baby goats to another lady.
Due to poverty, it was difficult to let go of the goat kid
Therefore none of the goat kids have been handed over to new beneficiaries.
The following are various reasons that Mrs. Alamelu Bannan conveyed - as told by beneficiaries for not giving goat kid to another lady-
- Only one goat kid was born. Only if it is twins, we can give away one
- the goat kid was not female. It was male. you said to donate a female kid
- we will give away only after 4 months of kid drinking milk and weaned away from mother goat.
- if we grow it for one year, we can sell for Rs.3000. Then we will keep rs.2000 and buy a female goat kid for Rs.1000 and give to another lady.
Mrs. Alamelu feels that it may take few more months to get the baby goats and give to new beneficiary
She has assured that she will continue to monitor and encourage ladies to give the baby goat to another women.
She also said that she will try to discuss with the 20 beneficiaries if they like to convert the goat project into a microloan project where they will repay Rs.50- Rs.100 per month for a total of Rs.1000( which is cost of a goat kid).
Feb 2010 Update:
